The atmosphere is dark and dreary and this clearly rubs off on the Younger family, who are irritable, restless and disturbed, noticeably unhappy with their lives. As small as the apartment is, ironically it is pulling the family members farther away from one another, stretching the family bond apart. As they see their employers and others in their own race improve themselves and enjoy the comforts of life, the Youngers feel walked on, like the worn out carpet that lies on their floor. The effects of their poverty and discrimination lead to oppression. Ruth, Walter Lee and Mama work at menial jobs, serving rich white people. They are further pressed into their poverty by performing such unfulfilling low skilled tasks.
All of this takes a toll on them as they come home daily to a bleak reminder of their poverty, an apartment that offers them nothing more than darkness and dreariness, a place where neither dreams nor people can survive. Dreams begin to fade away, yet they long for accomplishment and success beyond the four walls of their apartment. The house the Youngers buy on Clybourne Park represents their dignity and freedom. They are free from living on another man's property and paying rent. In a literal sense the house offers them a place where they can live and rest comfortably, not having to share a bathroom with other families. It is a roomy house with many windows and an even a small yard, allowing Mama's plant, symbolic of their dreams, to prosper.

The decision to move allows the Youngers to maintain their dignity, as they are determined to move into Clybourne Park despite the strong racist feelings they will encounter in their new home. Unlike life in the apartment, living in the new house will be rejuvenating as it represents an accomplishment in which the whole family can take pride. The sunlight in the new house signifies a fresh sense of hope and well being as the excitement of moving brings the family closer together. Moving from the apartment to the house is improving their lot in life as a family and as a race, lifting their spirits and allowing them to grow as a family. With a close-knit family even racism in Clybourne Park will not deter them from following their dreams. How to Cite this Page MLA Citation: "Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin In The Sun — Seeking Dreams.
A Raisin in the Sun — Mama Mama has dreams for her family to rise from poverty and live in a better and bigger place and also for them to continue to grow together as a family. Mama has a plant that she also cares for. She takes care of this plant as if it was one of her own children. Mama's children also have their own dreams and their own plans on how to attain those dreams. The family's competing dreams are emphasized by Hansberry's recurring use of the motif--Mama's plant. In the opening scene of the play Mama goes to her plant and nurtures it.
